Samsung Gear IconX Fitness Earbuds With Activity Tracker Review 2017

It’s not everyday you stumble across a pair of earbuds that come equipped with an activity tracker and powerful Bluetooth technology wrapped up in such a tiny package. Samsung is an industry leader when it comes to innovative audio technology and design, and the Samsung Gear Icon X Fitness Earbuds have taken “active wear” to an entirely new level.

Whether you’re an avid runner, gym rat, or are interested in your own personal health, the IconX Fitness Earbuds are a great option for anyone looking to track the intensity and stats behind their workouts. Granted, other technology like FitBit Watches exist, but not everyone wants to wear a watch throughout the entire day. Besides, a watch can’t blast music while simultaneously tracking your activity, and the dual functionality of the IconX Fitness Earbuds is certainly impressive.

Sound Quality:

First and foremost, the sound quality of the Samsung Gear IconX Fitness Earbuds needs to be addressed before analyzing any nifty features. These are premium headphones, and while built in activity tracking is exciting, it’s important to make sure your audio quality is up to snuff.

One of the potential downfalls of Bluetooth earphones can occur when the Bluetooth connection between earphone and audio device is weak or frequently cuts off. However, the IconX Fitness Earbuds have superb connectivity stability, and you won’t experience any sound loss or cutting. The overall audio quality is also solid, with warm tones and enough bass to remain noticeable during heavier bass lines or runs. There are better sounding earphones out there, but you’d be hard pressed to find an active pair of earphones with such a balanced, pleasant tone.

The IconX Fitness Earbuds also have impressive noise-cancellation ability, and this assists earphone performance during intense physical activity. With the IconX, you can truly isolate your surroundings and focus on your workout while enjoying the cord-free flexibility and freedom the earbuds provide.

Comfort and Durability:

As the IconX Fitness Earbuds are a premium model of earbuds, there are certain expectations that should be met (and thankfully are) when considering their design qualities. The IconX are designed to be durable as they are meant to be used while the user is physically engaged, and the plastic material is solid enough so that you won’t break the earbuds simply by dropping them. Overall, for a small yet powerful pair of earbuds, you shouldn’t have any concerns regarding durability.

The IconX Fitness Earbuds are also fairly comfortable, with adjustable ear tips and a compact size that makes them a snug fit. There are comfier earbud options out there (I personally think the Bose QuietComfort 20 are one of the most comfortable earphones out there), and I wouldn’t choose the IconX Fitness Earbuds as the audio device I’d use throughout the entire day. However, if you’re planning on hitting the gym or being active for a few hours, these earbuds are comfortable enough and fit extremely well. Samsung really nailed the functionality when it comes to active wear.

Features and Use:

The IconX Fitness Earbuds certainly come with a lot of bells and whistles considering their size and appearance. However, the most important and valuable feature the IconX possess is obviously the built in activity tracking technology. The IconX is compatible with pretty much any Smartphone, and you can connect to the Samsung Gear app for live activity tracking. Your steps, heart-rate, and total burned calories are all displayed on your phone for easy viewing during or after your workout session.

Just how accurate is the activity tracking? I’d say it’s accurate enough. While it may not be at the same level of FitBit watches, the IconX Fitness Earbuds give you a close enough ballpark so that you can accurately judge and track the intensity of your activity. I’m mostly a weight lifter, although I have used the IconX Fitness Earbuds during runs or walks as well. From my experience, very lengthy runs (10+ miles) have more inaccurate fitness readings than shorter activity periods, and this makes sense. Any slight discrepancy in fitness tracking will me more evident over a longer period of tracking time. However, if you’re planning on hitting the gym for 1-2 hours, you’ll have no meaningful error with tracking your fitness stats.

It should also be mentioned that the IconX Fitness Earbuds only hold up to 1000 songs, regardless of the file sizes. However, between your own music library and Bluetooth streaming, you can easily access your entire music library without issue. The battery life of the IconX Fitness Earbuds is slightly under 4 hours, yet a rechargeable carrying case in included with your purchase, allowing for on-the-go charging. As I mentioned, I wouldn’t rely on the IconX Fitness Earbuds for my entire day of audio enjoyment, but their power and flexibility makes them perfect for a workout.

The IconX Fitness Earbuds are also easy to control, a simple touch prompting the Gear IconX’s function guide. Track skipping, volume adjustment, phone call management, and ambient sound mode activation is made simple. All in all, the IconX Fitness Earbuds have a lot of nifty features, but Samsung gets it right and keeps usage straightforward.

The IconX Fitness Earbuds are flexible, multi-purposed, and still get the basics of solid audio performance down while remaining reasonably priced. All in all, these earbuds are an excellent buy for anyone looking to blend music and fitness technology into one tiny package. The audio quality remains solid while the built in fitness tracking technology provides any athlete with meaningful live stats. If you’re still seeking a pair of sports earphones but at a slightly lower price point, definitely check out our review on the Senso Bluetooth Sports Earphones. However, if premium audio quality, comfortable design, and live active tracking is what you’re looking for, definitely consider the IconX Fitness Earbuds.

Why You Should Buy the Samsung Gear IconX Fitness Earbuds:

  • You’re an active person who cares about tracking their workout performance and stats.

  • Wireless flexibility is important to you.

  • You want the complete package: audio performance, comfort, and valuable features.

Why The IconX Fitness Earbuds Might Not Be For You:

  • You aren’t active, or you simply don’t care about tracking your stats (careful, it does get addicting!)

  • You want earphones/headphones that you can also use the entire day.

  • You want earphones/headphones at a slightly lower price point.

Overall Impression:

It’s hard to be a Jack of all trades in any field, let alone the audio/electronics industry. I’m sure the future will bring waves of development in consumer electronics, but for the time being, Samsung is truly doing it right. The IconX Fitness Earbuds are versatile, high performing, and perfect for any active user looking to track health while bumping some tunes. They may not be the perfect pair of earbuds for easy, all day listening, but for athletic performance it’s hard to find a better pair of earbuds that the IconX.
